Democratic Senator Claire McCaskill of Missouri has joined with Republicans in questioning Barack Obama’s firing of the internal watchdog for Americorps. You’ll recall that Gerald Walpin, the inspector general for the governmental organization, was fired by the Obama Administration after he investigated a major Obama political supporter.
Sen. Claire McCaskill, D-Mo., said the president failed to follow a law she sponsored, which requires that he give Congress 30 days advance notice of an inspector general’s dismissal, along with the cause for the firing. Obama merely said he lost confidence in Walpin.
“Loss of confidence is not a sufficient reason,” McCaskill said. “I’m hopeful the White House will provide a more substantive rationale, in writing, as quickly as possible.”
As McCaskill says, the Inspectors General Reform Act, which was passed last year, requires that Congress is notified 30 days prior to the dismissal of an inspector general. Guess which current occupant of the White House co-sponsored the measure? If you answered “Barack Obama”, you win the money.
The firing was clearly political, yet most Democrats don’t seem even a fraction as outraged as when President Bush fired U.S. attorneys he had every legal right to fire. Funny that.
