Allahpundit and Karl are double-teaming on this one, so I’ll send you over there for the details. Be sure to read Allah’s update regarding former U.S. intelligence officials coming to Cheney’s defense on the issue.
Basically it comes down to this: Barack Obama’s approval numbers are down, Democrats are beginning to look like idiots for quickly passing an $800 billion stimulus package that hasn’t stimulated anything, and legislative issues such as cap-and-trade and the socialization of our health-care system are rapidly losing support with the general population. They need a distraction and they need one fast.
So they’re going on a witch-hunt, pretending as if a program the public has known about for 7 years is a recently-exposed, super-secret conspiracy that calls for an all-out Congressional investigation. It amounts to distracting the public with a shiny object in one hand while passing outrageous legislation with the other.
We just have to make sure the public sees the “investigation” for the cheap political ploy that it is. Spread the word.
