by Stephan Tawney on July 20, 2009

The federal government spent $16,784,272 on canned pork in Minnesota’s 1st Congressional District, represented by Rep. Tim Walz (D).

According to the $18 million Recovery.gov website, the massive expenditure for an unspecified amount of the meat was awarded to Lakeside Foods Inc. after a sealed bid competition with just two offers received. Lakeside Foods is based in Manitowoc, Wisconsin and had a revenue of $209 million in 2008.
