It seems that each news story coming out of the Gates/Cambridge story demonstrates just how moronic it was for Barack Obama to take his buddy’s side without knowing the facts.
First came the revelation that the arresting officer taught racial tolerance classes. Next the officer’s former black police commissioner testified to his decency and confirmed that the officer was widely respected by his colleagues. Then the Cambridge police union — representing officers of all races and creeds — stood by his side at a public press conference.
Now another officer who was present at Gates’ home at the time of arrest has come out in Sgt. James Crowley’s defense. Sgt. Leon Lashley says that the arrest of Gates was absolutely justified. By the way, it just so happens at Sgt. Lashley is himself black.
CAMBRIDGE, Mass. (AP) — A black police officer who was at Henry Louis Gates Jr.’s home when the black Harvard scholar was arrested says he fully supports how his white fellow officer handled the situation.
Sgt. Leon Lashley says Gates was probably tired and surprised when Sgt. James Crowley demanded identification from him as officers investigated a report of a burglary. Lashley says Gates’ reaction to Crowley was “a little bit stranger than it should have been.”
Asked if Gates should have been arrested, Lashley said supported Crowley “100 percent.”
Perhaps Professor Gates believes that Lashley is racist, too. After all, Lashley indicates that he would’ve arrested Gates himself based on the behavior witnessed at the scene. Would this have been a case of racial profiling if the arresting officer was himself black?
The whole story has been moronic from the get-go. There’s nothing in Crowley’s history to indicate racism. He attempted to save the life of black NBA player Reggie Lewis back in 1993. He was hand-picked to teach racial tolerance classes by a black police commissioner. He regularly works alongside officers of all races. He even works at the police academy alongside a black officer.
Perhaps Barack Obama should’ve followed his “I don’t have all of the facts” statement with “so I’ll just shut up”. You know, instead of just coming out and insulting the Cambridge police force. Because now he looks like a race-baiter willing to attack first-responders in order to defend a personal friend. All while acknowledging that he doesn’t know what happened.
