First of all, DPRK state media is reporting that Clinton came with a special “message” from Barack Obama, specifically an apology on behalf of the United States. The White House is denying that any apology was offered, but would it really surprise you if the state-run media is right? Obama has spent months going on an apology tour across the world. I wouldn’t put it past him to offer one in an attempt to save his own ass with the American public.
Second, if HopenChange is such a great idea that involves “smart power”, why did it fail? You can’t tell me that calling in a former, more conservative president to handle the situation is indicative of an Obama Administration success. The One was unable to get the journalists freed through his “Everyone Likes Me” shtick, so he called in an old-timer with a history of diplomatic involvement with Pyongyang. Here’s a hint: Having to call in a guy you’ve actually demonized before, a guy who left your position 8 years ago, means you failed.
Finally, Bill Clinton does deserve credit here. Does he benefit from being in the press again? Sure. But that doesn’t mean that he had to take the time to visit Kim Jong-Il at home. And he certainly didn’t need to help Barack Obama’s image, especially after Obama harshly attacked both him and his wife during the campaign. He should be commended for making the trip.
