Creigh Deeds ’99: No Special Rights for Gays

by Stephan Tawney on September 10, 2009

One of the media’s favorite games these days consists of using twenty-year-old statements made by Virginia Republican gubernatorial candidate Bob McDonnell.

Apparently using decades-old statements against McDonnell is fine, yet the media found the use of years-old statements by Obama unacceptable during the presidential campaign. Odd that.

Anyway, the Washington Post has now taken to accusing McDonnell of homophobia for opposing the reappointment of a lesbian judge, er, accused of sexual harassment.

But perhaps the Washington Post could take, I don’t know, one reporter off the task of trying to slime McDonnell and reassign him to digging up dirt on McDonnell’s Democratic opponent, Creigh Deeds.

You see, the Weekly Standard was able to locate a ten-year-old campaign ad of Deeds’, in which he talks about his opposition to “special rights” for gays:

NO SPECIAL RIGHTS FOR GAYS
I don’t believe in discrimination, but I don’t believe in special rights for anyone. I have never voted to allow gay partners to receive medical insurance — or any other benefit — from the state. It’s sad that Mr. Collins has to resort to bigotry and hate-mongering.

Is that not homophobic in the view of the Washington Post? Opposing the reappointment of a gay individual accused of sexual harassment is homophobic, but not explicitly bragging about your opposition to allowing gay partners the same benefits straight partners are provided? Interesting logic there.
