Yes, years. This is famed economist and director of the National Economic Council Larry Summers. Now, there are two possibilities here.
1) Summers is only saying this as a calculated political move, so when we have relatively low unemployment two years from now, Obama can claim to have beat economic predictions on the recovery. Summers can claim to be pleasantly surprised and glad to be wrong, while Obama can look like the King Poobah of saving the economy just in time for his re-election.
2) Summers is telling the truth and we really are royally screwed. In which case, Republicans pick up Congress and the White House in their respective election years. Good news for the party, but bad news overall for a country already falling behind the continued growth of China and India.
As an American, I’m hoping it’s the former. I want to see my party win and I’d hate to watch Obama achieve victory based on lies told years earlier about predictions, but our nation continuing to hurt and come in second place as an economic powerhouse simply wouldn’t be worth the cost.
