I’m all for reducing the number of nuclear weapons worldwide, so don’t misunderstand my position here. But the Guardian reports that Barack Obama will reduce our stockpile of nuclear weapons without Russia or China agreeing to do the same or Iran making any concessions.
We’re literally just talking about the United States and Great Britain — two responsible, important members of the arsenal for freedom — reducing their weapons inventory while Russia, China, and Iran do whatever they want.
Barack Obama has demanded the Pentagon conduct a radical review of US nuclear weapons doctrine to prepare the way for deep cuts in the country’s arsenal, the Guardian can reveal.
Obama has rejected the Pentagon’s first draft of the “nuclear posture review” as being too timid, and has called for a range of more far-reaching options consistent with his goal of eventually abolishing nuclear weapons altogether, according to European officials.
Those options include:
• Reconfiguring the US nuclear force to allow for an arsenal measured in hundreds rather than thousands of deployed strategic warheads.
• Redrafting nuclear doctrine to narrow the range of conditions under which the US would use nuclear weapons.
• Exploring ways of guaranteeing the future reliability of nuclear weapons without testing or producing a new generation of warheads.
The review is due to be completed by the end of this year, and European officials say the outcome is not yet clear. But one official said: “Obama is now driving this process. He is saying these are the president’s weapons, and he wants to look again at the doctrine and their role.”
In other words, Obama’s going to unilaterally disarm and hope that our, for all intents and purposes, enemies do the same. Apparently reducing your national defense and hoping that your enemies will be kind and do the same is all part of this “smart power” in the age of HopenChange.
This guy makes Bill Clinton look like Ronald Reagan. It’s as if a college student is running our country in between a political science class, Free Tibet protest, and anti-nuclear rally. It was cute and pathetic at first, but now it’s just getting dangerous.
It’s time for some pro-defense Democrats to stand up to their president and say, “no”. It’s time for them to let him know that they won’t accept the continued weakening of our national defense and now unilateral disarmament. But I’m not holding my breath that they’ll stand up to the Messiah.
