In the latest anti-democratic move by the Obama Administration, the Department of Health and Human Services has decided to investigate private insurer Humana. For committing some sort of crime? Nope. For sending out a mailer to its customers in regards to ObamaCare.
That’s right: The government is investigating a private company for its use of free speech.
The government is investigating a major insurance company for allegedly trying to scare seniors with a mailer warning they could lose important benefits under health care legislation in Congress.
The Health and Human Services Department launched its investigation of Humana after getting a complaint from Sen. Max Baucus, D-Mont., a senior lawmaker usually viewed as a reliable ally of the insurance industry.
“It is wholly unacceptable for insurance companies to mislead seniors regarding any subject — particularly on a subject as important to them, and to the nation, as health care reform,” Baucus said Monday, disclosing the HHS investigation.
Humana Inc., headquartered in Louisville, Ky., is cooperating with the investigation and stopped the mailer earlier this month, company spokesman Tom Noland said Monday.
The Senate committee that Baucus chairs — Finance — will vote this week on a sweeping health care plan that he’s proposed to expand coverage and try to control costs. It would cut Medicare and Medicaid spending by about $500 billion over 10 years, but Baucus says that would lead to greater efficiency, not reduced benefits.
Humana had the nerve to contradict the administration and Congressional liberals in their claims, already proven false by reliable outlets, so now the company is being investigated. Baucus, one of the crafters of a version of ObamaCare, is attempting — with cooperation from the Obama Administration — to intimidate private companies into being silent on attempts by the government to shut them down.
By the way, Humana is indeed correct in its assessment of ObamaCare. As the Associated Press and others have already confirmed, one of President Obama’s proposals was cutting $500 billion from Medicare in order to fund his socialized health care plan. The Obama Administration has also announced its intention to significantly cut or do away entirely with Medicare Advantage, which seniors use to cover more of their health costs.
But even if Humana was wrong, the Obama Administration has no right to be limiting free speech in dissent from its policy objectives. That’s not democratic — it’s dictatorial. No wonder Barack Obama has been siding with Manuel Zelaya, Raul Castro, and Hugo Chavez. He’s probably jealous of their powers to control the national debate.
