Iran Reveals Existence of Second Nuke Plant

Apparently Tehran rushed to reveal its secret facilities after it discovered that the United States and its allies learned of their existence. So much for that 2007 NIE report that Iran had stopped its program?

PITTSBURGH, Sept. 25 — President Obama and the leaders of France and Britain blasted Iran’s construction of a previously unacknowledged uranium enrichment facility and demanded Friday that Tehran immediately fulfill its obligations under international law or risk the imposition of harsh new sanctions.

“Iran is breaking rules that all nations must follow,” Obama said, detailing how the facility near Qom had been under construction for years without being disclosed, as required, to the International Atomic Energy Agency. “International law is not an empty promise.”

No, but Obama’s promise to stop Iran from acquiring a nuclear weapon is. His threat if they don’t immediately allow UN inspectors into their secret facilities? More sanctions that have proven completely and totally ineffective in the past.

The secret nuclear plant is located near Qom, a major holy city for Shiites. If Israel bombs the facility, Tehran will claim it’s an attack on Islam and rally the nation to its side. So there’s no easy military option, either.

Oh, and remember how the Obama Administration gave Iran until September to respond to the west’s offer of negotiations? It’s quietly been extended until December, which I’m sure will be extended again in the future to avoid the deadline ever actually coming to fruititon.

Like I said, international law isn’t an empty promise. But Obama’s promise to not allow Iran to have nuclear weapons is.
