ACORN’s Oklahoma “Power” Grab

by Howard W. Houchen on October 1, 2009

Reports are beginning to emerge concerning the Association of Community Organizations for Reform Now (ACORN) “Power Plan” to wrestle political power and control from the citizens of Oklahoma and place it squarely in the hands of the ACORN apparatus itself.

According to reports in The Oklahoman  (http://newsok.com/acorn-plot-found-oklahoma-gop-says/article/3405118) and at Oklahoma Watchdog (http://oklahoma.watchdog.org/2009/09/30/acorn-tactics-revealed-in-discovered-documents/), in 2007 ACORN had developed and had begun utilizing a five-year plan to obtain “power”.  Among the thousands of documents, one was reported to have contained the following: “Therefore, the route to power is twofold: First, build powerful city organizations in Oklahoma City and Tulsa that can control these municipalities. Second, become an influential organization by shaping a handful of strategic legislative districts that, by themselves, can change who controls the state legislature.”

“(W)e will be seen as the force that is making Oklahoma a progressive state in the way that it was 100 years ago.”

“By using this power to win significant changes for working people, by the end of our 5 years, we will have legitimized the progressive takeover of the statehouse and head into 2012 with a real possibility of changing what Oklahomans look for and expect out of their Congressional delegation.”

We should be reminded that ACORN issued legislative “scorecards” rating Senators and Representatives on how “well”  they performed relative to issues ACORN supported.  The 2006 scorecard rated every member of the Oklahoma federal delegation at 0% with the exception of Rep. Dan Boren (D) who received a 44% rating.  This means that Boren, the lone Democrat in the Oklahoma delegation, voted along the lines of ACORN supported issues at a rate of 44% of the time while all others never voted to support those same pieces of legislation.

The key word contained in the above passages is “PROGRESSIVE”.  Since ACORN has received federal funds (money taken by the federal government that you and I earned), the organization is legally bound to actions that do not support one party over another.  The progressive moniker has been adopted by many in the Democratic Party and by none in the Republican Party.

As these reports gain validity, which I believe they will, it becomes increasingly clear that ACORN was not only pursuing illegal activities, they also intended to control the state legislative agenda and processes while keeping a wanting eye on OUR federal-level Congressional delegation in hopes of gaining influence there as well.  This is nothing less than an overt attempt by ACORN to usurp the voice and the power of the voting citizens of the great State of Oklahoma.

The question that follows is simple: If Oklahoma, one of the most conservative states in this Republic, is a target state, what else and where else has ACORN been actively pursuing illegal activities (using your money and mine) under the guise of “Voter Registration”  in order to gain “PROGRESSIVE” Control?

It is time for citizens to stand up and demand of their state and federal legislators a comprehensive investigation into all ACORN activities and hold each and everyone accountable for their actions.  If not, this nation of laws rather than men will be served another devastating blow critically wounding the notion of the legitimacy of power and justice.
