In a bi-partisan move that defied Democratic Party leadership, 90 House Democrats have joined with Republicans in blocking funds that would be used to close the Guantanamo Bay detention facility during 2010.
While President Obama may be interested in closing the facility and shipping terrorists to American soil or the soil of nations across the globe, Republicans and some Democrats in Congress have shown that they have no intention of helping him do so.
Lawmakers are using their authority to direct federal spending to prevent the Obama administration from closing the prison at Guantanamo Bay.
In their race to complete a dozen appropriations bills for the fiscal year that began this week, members of both chambers are including policy language aimed at halting the administration’s decision to transfer prisoners from the Cuban facility to prisons in their districts.
The latest example came on Thursday when the House instructed conferees negotiating with the Senate on a final version of the Homeland Security spending bill to include language prohibiting the transfer of Guantanamo detainees to U.S. soil. The bill already includes a provision prohibiting the detainees from air travel within or to the United States.
This is actually the fourth appropriations bill that includes language specifically barring the use of federal funds for closing Gitmo, largely in defiance of Democratic Congressional leaders and liberal activists. The latter continue to operate under the illusion that a majority of the American people is behind them. They’re wrong.
Which isn’t to say that President Obama can’t find a way around these restrictions and close the terror detention facility, transferring terrorists to American soil, anyway. But Republicans and some Democrats in Congress doesn’t appear ready to help him reach his insane goal.
