Russia Backs Away from Sanctions Against Iran

Liberals have been desperately spinning Barack Obama’s idiotic decision to kill the missile defense shield in Europe as a move that would earn us support from countries like Russia in stopping Iran’s nuclear program. That despite the fact that Russia is largely helping Iran build up its nuclear program and could stop anytime if it wished.

Anyway, Russia has been blocking sanctions up until now and it looks like Moscow has no intention of changing that position.

MOSCOW (AP) — Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov said Tuesday that the threat of sanctions against Iran would be counterproductive, resisting U.S. efforts to win agreement for measures if Iran fails to prove its nuclear program is peaceful.

Lavrov spoke following talks with U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton, who is trying to gauge Moscow’s willingness to join the U.S. in imposing sanctions if Iran fails to come clean on its nuclear activities.

Lavrov said Russia’s position is that under current conditions even the threat of sanctions against Iran would be counterproductive.

In other words, no new sanctions against Iran. Liberals had been spinning that we gave up the missile shield in order to win Russia’s support for new sanctions.

What does that mean now? We gave up a crucial aspect of national security, we broke promises made to staunch allies, in order to please Russia but get nothing of value in return. We gave up a missile defense shield just to see Putin smile. Fantastic.
