Video: Al Gore Proves How Ignorant He Truly Is

by Stephan Tawney on November 18, 2009

Al Gore never was a scientist before and he isn’t now. But that hasn’t stopped him from pontificating on “global warming”, warning that the planet will be destroyed unless we destroy our economy in the name of protecting the environment first. He promotes questionable science with little expertise himself.

Which brings us to his appearance the other evening on Conan O’Brien’s last night program. Gore was asked about geothermal energy and whether it could be harnessed as an alternative energy source. He responded with a statement that would set off bullshit alarms for a high school student with a basic understanding of earth science.

Conan: Now, what about … you talk in the book about geothermal energy …

Al: Yeah, yeah.

Conan: and that is, as I understand it, using the heat that’s generated from the core of the earth …

Al: Yeah.

Conan: … to create energy, and it sounds to me like an evil plan by Lex Luthor to defeat Superman. Can you, can you tell me, is this a viable solution, geothermal energy?

Al: It definitely is, and it’s a relatively new one. People think about geothermal energy — when they think about it at all — in terms of the hot water bubbling up in some places, but two kilometers or so down in most places there are these incredibly hot rocks, ’cause the interior of the earth is extremely hot, several million degrees, and the crust of the earth is hot …

Holy factual errors, Batman.

The center of the earth is several “million” degrees? Million? What are we, the sun? Let’s ask the United States Department of Energy how hot the core of our planet is, shall we?

There is no way to measure the temperature at the Earth’s core directly. We know from mines and drill holes that, near the surface of the Earth, the temperature increases by about 1 degree Fahrenheit for every 60 feet in depth. If this temperature increase continued to the center of the Earth, the Earth’s core would be 100,000 degrees Celsius!

But nobody believes the Earth is that hot; the temperature increase must slow down with depth and the core is probably about 3000 to 5000 degrees Celsius.

In other words, the hottest spot on the planet is believed to be about 5,000 degrees Celsius (about 9,000 degrees Fahrenheit). And what did Al Gore, climate genius, claim again?

’cause the interior of the earth is extremely hot, several million degrees…

How anyone can take this man seriously on scientific matters is beyond me. He’s displayed a lack of basic scientific knowledge, spouting out “facts” that anyone with access to Google knows is complete and total bullshit.
