He can’t be serious. Democrats want to spend $1.8 trillion taking over the nation’s healthcare system, have already spent $787 billion in “stimulus” legislation that has yet to stimulate anything, and support legislation (cap-and-trade) that independent studies have confirmed will cost American jobs and harm the GDP. The annual deficit is $1.4 trillion and climbing, with the deficit for October being 400% larger than that of September.
But it comes to funding a surge of troops to win the war in Afghanistan and suddenly Democrats are terribly concerned about spending money we don’t have. All of sudden we need to raise taxes in order to avoid building on top of the deficit. Amazingly, national defense is the issue Democrats feel we can’t afford.
The powerful chairman of the House Appropriations Committee has a stark message for President Obama about Afghanistan – sending more troops would be a mistake that could “wipe out every initiative we have to rebuild our own economy.”
“There ain’t going to be no money for nothing if we pour it all into Afghanistan,” House Appropriations Chairman David Obey told ABC News in an exclusive interview. “If they ask for an increased troop commitment in Afghanistan, I am going to ask them to pay for it.” …
Obey, a Democrat from Wisconsin, made it clear that he is absolutely opposed to sending any more U.S. troops to Afghanistan and says if Obama decides to do that, he’ll demand a new tax — what he calls a “war surtax” — to pay for it.
“On the merits, I think it is a mistake to deepen our involvement,” Obey said. “But if we are going to do that, then at least we ought to pay for it. Because if we don’t, if we don’t pay for it, the cost of the Afghan war will wipe out every initiative we have to rebuild our own economy.”
Hey, remember back in 2006-2007 when we were debating the surge for Iraq? Democrats claimed they weren’t anti-war, they just opposed the war in Iraq because they thought resources could better be utilized in Afghanistan. They didn’t want to withdraw from Iraq because they were liberal pantywaists who didn’t care about winning the war on terror. They just believed the battle in Afghanistan was more important.
Well, here we are. The war in Iraq is essentially wrapping up, the situation has been stabilized, and we’re handing over more and more sections of the country to the Iraqi government. Attention has turned to the fight in Afghanistan, as military leaders say they need a surge of troops and additional resources in order to win what Democrats called the “good war”. And now where are Democrats?
Opposing any additional allocation of resources for the fight in Afghanistan, with some even insisting we withdraw as soon as possible.
Why, it’s like they’re just a bunch of anti-war activists who only claimed they supported winning in Afghanistan in order to win at the ballot box. It’s as if they didn’t oppose the war in Iraq because they supported the one in Afghanistan, but rather are just all-around anti-war pantywaists. Amazing.
And now we’re hearing from the people who quadrupled the deficit that we need to be fiscally responsible when it comes to our national defense. We’re being lectured on the evils of deficit spending by the same people who want to spend $1.8 trillion to socialize America’s health care industry.
