Dem Senator: Agree With Obama’s KSM Decision or Leave The Country

by Stephan Tawney on November 25, 2009

Funny story: The overwhelming majority of Americans, including a majority of both major political parties and independents, disagree with the Obama Administration’s decision to try the 9/11 mastermind in a civilian trial in New York.

So apparently Senator Kent Conrad (D-ND) thinks the overwhelming majority of Americans, including a majority of his party, should just pack up and leave the country. That doesn’t scream “great re-election strategy” to me, but what do I know.

(CNSNews.com) – Sen. Kent Conrad (D-N.D.) told CNSNews.com that civilian courts are well-suited to prosecute al Qaeda terrorists and that “if people don’t believe in our system, maybe they ought to go somewhere else.”

Get that? If you don’t believe civilian courts should try war criminals, go somewhere else. Conrad continues his bout of genius:

On Capitol Hill on Nov. 19, CNSNews.com asked Conrad: “We’re going to have a civilian trial of Khalid Sheikh Mohammed. If our troops–the evidence against him is going to be found in Afghanistan, there on the battlefield–if our troops need to enter a house and they think that there’s evidence there, should they have to establish probable cause and get a search warrant from a judge first?”

Conrad said: “You’re not being serious about these questions, are you?”

Um…why not? We’re trying them in civilian courts as if they’re American citizens accused of trespassing on their neighbor’s property. It’s so outrageous to wonder if we need to grant them the same rights as, er, American citizens accused of trespassing on their neighbor’s property?

Incidentally, Obama praised military trials for Al Qaeda members back a few years ago. Chuck Schumer assured us a few weeks after 9/11 that we wouldn’t be trying the suspects in civilian courts because that would be ridiculous. Apparently they should’ve left the country.
