Five-year-old Shaniya Davis was kidnapped and killed a few weeks ago, her body found alongside the road by police. As if that weren’t horrific enough, her mother has now been charged with human trafficking and child prostitution. A man by the name of Mario McNeill has been charged with the girl’s murder.

Apparently moved by the national coverage of this devastating case, basketball star Shaquille O’Neal decided to give little Shaniya a proper funeral at his expense.

The Cleveland Cavaliers player was touched by the stories he saw and got in touch with the family to see what he could do to help, a spokeswoman for O’Neal said Thursday.

“I was sitting at home watching it on the news and the story brought a tear to my eye,” O’Neal told The Cleveland Plain Dealer newspaper.

Corey Breece, of Rogers and Breece Funeral Home, which handled the service, declined to tell the Fayetteville Observer newspaper how much it cost but added that a child’s funeral “averages around $4,500.”

That was a very classy move on Shaq’s part. It says a great deal about his character.
