Surprise: Gallup Finds Majority Opposing Civilian Trial for KSM

by Stephan Tawney on November 27, 2009

Yet another poll demonstrating that an overwhelming majority of Americans don’t believe war criminals responsible for killing 3,000 innocent people should be tried in civilian court. In fact, the poll found barely a majority of Democrats defending the Obama Administration’s disastrous decision.

By 59% to 36%, more Americans believe accused Sept. 11 mastermind Khalid Sheikh Mohammed should be tried in a military court, rather than in a civilian criminal court. Most Republicans and independents favor holding the trial in a military court, while the slight majority of Democrats disagree.

These findings come from a Nov. 20-22 USA Today/Gallup poll conducted a week after U.S. Attorney General Eric Holder announced that Mohammed’s case would move from a military tribunal in Guantanamo Bay, where the admitted terrorist was originally charged, to a federal court in New York City.

Democratic leaders once again find themselves in opposition not only to Republicans, which would be expected, but with the all-important independent voters that Obama carried last year. But even at that, barely a slight majority of even Democrats agree with the decision.

Ed notes:

The partisan breakdown is significant, too. Republicans oppose the decision 74/22, as might be expected. Independents, though, also oppose it by almost 2-1, 63/32. Democrats support it — but only by eight points, 51/43. Support for a federal court trial is a fringe position among everyone but Democrats.

Which has often been the case with this administration, from its decision on the Mexico City policy to its support for socialized health care. That’s no surprise. Obama and his cronies are far-left activists who posed as moderate pragmatists in order to win in a strong anti-incumbent year. Of course the majority of Americans will disapprove of their policies.

Incidentally, an even larger majority of Americans — 77% — believe KSM and his terror cronies should be executed upon conviction. And yet don’t be surprised if we hear from left-wing editorial pages, academics, and even members of Congress that we should spare their pathetic lives.
