Surprise: ACORN Considering Changing Name

by Stephan Tawney on November 30, 2009

How terribly predictable.

ACORN is looking to wipe away its absolutely destroyed reputation following the now-famous undercover video sting that showed its employees helping further the underage sex trade and commit tax fraud. So, like countless organizations found committing crimes and infested with corruption, it’s considering a branding change.

ACORN, the troubled community service organization, recently considered changing its name in a bid to rehabilitate its image, according to an internal memo obtained by POLITICO.

The document, which will be released Tuesday as part of a Republican congressional forum on ACORN, illustrates the internal deliberation the group has undergone after a year of embarrassing scandals.

The document was found in Dumpster outside of an ACORN office in San Diego, a House Republican aide said. Derrick Roach, an unsuccessful Republican candidate for statehouse in California, took thousands of documents last week from the trash outside the office. An ACORN spokesman confirmed the veracity of the document.

ACORN has been tripped up by voter registration fraud allegations and an undercover investigation which had its employees offering advice on how to set up a brothel and evade taxes. Congress passed, and President Barack Obama signed, a law that cut off much of the organization’s federal funding.

“Our members are having a vigorous discussion about how to move forward most effectively to help working families win living wage jobs, stop foreclosures, and strengthen neighborhoods,” ACORN spokesman Scott Levenson said in a response to inquiries from POLITICO.

In other words, they’re going to continue their corrupt and fraudulent ways, just under a name that they hope no one will connect with their history. How typical.

I wouldn’t be surprised if Congress went back to funding this newly-named version of ACORN, too. This way members can hand over billions of tax dollars to the radical, corruption leftist organization without being labeled allies of ACORN. In fact, the Obama Justice Department is already saying federal agencies must continue to hand over tax dollars to this organization.

By the way, this is the same ACORN with dozens of members in prison for voter fraud-related convictions. The same ACORN under investigation by numerous states for voter fraud itself. The same ACORN which Hannah Giles and James O’Keefe found very helpful in their faked attempts to commit tax fraud and engage in the sex trade.

And, of course, the same ACORN for which President Obama worked back during his Chicago days.
