CNN: Obama Approval Below 50% For the First Time

by Stephan Tawney on December 4, 2009

Barack Obama has a higher disapproval rating than approval rating for the first time in a CNN poll. Just forty-eight percent of American adults approve of the job Obama is doing, while fifty percent disapprove. That represents a 7% drop in approval since last month alone.

“American adults” is usually the polling demographic most favorable to Democrats. “Likely voters” is typically more favorable to Republican candidates. So the fact that Obama is upside down in the former demographic makes the news even worse for the White House and its allies.

The poll also found that the majority of Americans agree with Obama on sending an additional 30,000 troops to Afghanistan, but they disagree with his decision to air the date for beginning a withdrawal beforehand. Which, perhaps not coincidentally, also happens to be the position of most conservatives (favoring the surge, not favoring the aired deadline).
