As you probably know by now, cable provider Comcast has decided to purchase entertainment giant NBC Universal for about $30 billion. This acquisition has many in Washington cautious about approving the deal, as a distributor would end up controlling the content it broadcasts. (The Weather Channel, CNBC, MSNBC, NBC, and many local stations are all owned by NBC Universal.)
How will Comcast end up winning over the liberals in control of Washington? Possibly by announcing support for their left-wing agenda. As Noel Sheppard reports, via Hot Air, the CEO of Comcast has suddenly come out in support of Congressional Democratic health care reform efforts.
On the same day Comcast announced it was buying a 51 percent stake in General Electric’s NBC Universal, its CEO sent a letter to President Obama supporting the Senate’s healthcare bill.
At virtually the same time, high-ranking Democrats in the House and Senate said Thursday they will closely scrutinize the proposed alliance to determine its impact on the media marketplace.
Coincidence?
Doubtful. Chief executives at major, publicly traded companies don’t decide to endorse controversial legislation because they have nothing else to do on Friday. Usually they’re looking for a return for their support. Maybe approval for a controversial, multi-billion dollar merger?
