Nile River Ferries Collide, Dozens of People Missing

by Stephan Tawney on December 4, 2009

I’ve always been intrigued by the Nile and its long history of supporting (and often harming) civilization. So this grabbed my attention when I saw it on BBC News.

Two passenger ferries have collided on the river, leaving dozens of people missing in the water. While rescuers continue searching for survivors, sadly three bodies have already been discovered. That number is likely to rise. Apparently one of the ferries actually sank after the collision.

Update: There appear to be conflicting reports. BBC says fifty people are missing while Reuters puts the figure at eighty.

Update X2: BBC says six injured people have been taken to the hospital. Not sure if that low figure is good or bad.
