Breaking: Bomb Explodes Near KFC in Pakistan

by Stephan Tawney on December 5, 2009

A bomb has exploded near a KFC fast food restaurant in the Pakistani city of Peshawar.

There’s no word yet on casualties, but BBC News quotes local police saying there are vehicles damaged and store windows smashed in the nearby area.

Update: A motivation for the bombing? The Associated Press says the western restaurant is well-known in the area and has security guards stationed outside.

Update X2: There are now reports of fatalities. Nothing confirmed on the major wire services yet.

Update X3: Grain of salt until further confirmation, but EarthTimes.org is also reporting multiple fatalities. The website says that it was a car bomb detonated in a busy market that houses the KFC outlet. At least one building is reportedly on fire.

Update X4: Even as the bombing news is still breaking, Reuters reports that dozens of militants have attacked a Pakistani army checkpoint with AK-47s and rocket-propelled grenades. At least one soldier is dead.

Update X5: Here we go. Al Jazeera says several people were killed in the bombing outside KFC.

Update X6: More confirmations of multiple deaths.

Update X7: Sky News now confirms, too.
