Dems Now Targeting Private Sector Insurance Exec Pay

by Stephan Tawney on December 5, 2009

Because what would a day in Washington be without Congressional Democrats overstepping constitutional boundaries and interfering with the pay practices of private companies?

Actually this case goes beyond the regular unjustified (and unconstitutional) interference in the private sector. The target is insurance executives — an obvious attempt to demonize the private companies as Democratic health care socialization attempts are failing to win over the public. Democrats are once again labeling profits evil and insisting that success be punished.

With Democrats preparing to vote on an amendment targeting tax breaks for insurance executives’ pay, Reid lashed out at “greedy health insurance companies” that he said make profits by neglecting consumers’ health needs.

Reid, D-Nev., called the weekend session as he races the clock to complete action on the 2,000-page remake of the nation’s health care system by Christmas. With both sides jockeying for political advantage amid raging partisan debate, Democratic senators used their weekend work to cite their commitment to Obama’s signature issue…

The amendment would not specifically limit how much insurance executives’ could be paid, but how much of their pay companies could deduct as a business expense. Currently that amount is $1 million per executive. Lincoln’s amendment would reduce it to the level of the U.S. president’s salary, now $400,000.

Lincoln being Senator Blanche Lincoln (D-AR). Why is she attacking the pay of executives at private insurance companies? Because her poll numbers have been collapsing since she came out in favor of socialized health care. It’s a tough re-election campaign next year and she’s on course to losing her seat. She hopes attacking profits and success will turn the frown on her constituents’ faces upside down.

Oh, and to distract from the fact that Democrats are pushing legislation that guts Medicare by several hundred billion dollars, jeopardizing access to health care for millions of America’s senior citizens. Republicans put forth an amendment that would eliminate the Medicare cuts from the legislation, but Democrats joined together to defeat the attempt. They’re bound and determined to ration care for our parents and grandparents.

Attacking the private sector, pushing socialized health care, demonizing profits and success, exploding the deficit, and seeking to ration care for those who aren’t cost-effective. Just another day in Washington for the liberal Democratic Party.
