Reminder: Released Lockerbie Bomber Should Be Dead By Now

by Stephan Tawney on December 9, 2009

Hey, remember when Scottish authorities released Lockerbie bomber and mass murderer Abdelbaset al-Megrahi on “compassionate” grounds? We were told he was dying of cancer and had less than three months to live, so he was sent home to Libya where he received a hero’s welcome.

This after serving just eight years of a life sentence for killing the 270 people aboard Pan Am Flight 103 back in 1988.

Shortly after we learned that his release may’ve been tied to Scottish oil deals in Libya, his freedom being one of the “unofficial” conditions for the contracts to go through. There were even internal memos released that discussed “overwhelming national interests” — economic interests — being considered.

Well, guess what? It’s December 9 and al-Megrahi was released back in August. If the “compassionate” story was accurate, he should be dead by now. And yet there’s absolutely no indication that he is. In fact, Reuters quoted a Libyan official in late October confirming that the Lockerbie bomber is alive and stable.

Why isn’t he dead? Did he even have cancer to begin with? Or was this really all about oil contracts and the “overwhelming national interests” of Scotland?
