President Barack Obama has ordered an immediate surge of U.S. air marshals by February 1st, hoping to beat a slew of planned terror attacks believed to be in the pipeline. ABC News reports that officials are calling the surge, “(a) race against time”.
Under a preliminary plan, the officials said the already existing federal air marshal force of more than 3,200 personnel would be deployed almost exclusively to overseas flights flown by U.S. carriers.
Domestic high-risk flights will be covered by agents from other federal law enforcement agencies who were trained as air marshals in the wake of the Sept. 11, 2001 attacks.
“The personnel we trained back then comprised a kind of reserve air marshal force and they are now going to be borrowed on orders from the President to work domestic flights,” said a senior law enforcement agent briefed on the plan.
Yeah, I’m sure there’s no imminent or specific threat. We’ve allegedly deployed special forces and truck loads of money to Yemen, British officials are warning of dozens of individuals in their country planning to carry out attacks, we’ve just implemented advanced security screening procedures for 14 mostly-Muslim nations, and now the president of the United States is ordering an immediate surge of federal air marshals.
But there’s no imminent or specific threat in mind. Just run-of-the-mill security procedures, you see. Nothing to see here, just move along.
