Wow: Chris Dodd to Announce Retirement

by Stephan Tawney on January 6, 2010

Make that three major Democratic retirements in the past 24 hours. Senator Byron Dorgan (D-ND), Governor Bill Ritter (D-CO), and now Senator Chris Dodd (D-CT). The ship is sinking and the rats are jumping.

I’d say this makes him more likely to vote for socialized health care now, but he was on board with the socialism before. He just won’t have to give a concession speech on election night now.

Embattled Connecticut Sen. Chris Dodd (D) has scheduled a press conference at his home in Connecticut Wednesday at which he is expected to announce he will not seek re-election, according to sources familiar with his plans.

Dodd’s retirement comes after months of speculation about his political future, and amid faltering polling numbers and a growing sense among the Democratic establishment that he could not win a sixth term. It also comes less than 24 hours after Sen. Byron Dorgan (D-N.D.) announced he would not seek re-election.

This is also makes it more likely that Democrats will hold the seat. Dodd was opposed by even many donkeys in Connecticut who were disgusted by his corruption and lies. Now they’ll get a fresh slate Democratic nominee in a deep blue state.

For me, the joy will be returning Dodd to the private sector. He may’ve retired before the election, but he retired only because his poll numbers were so atrocious. So there’s that. Still, would’ve been nice to throw his ass on the curb in November.
