Coakley to Spend Evening With Lobbyists

by Stephan Tawney on January 12, 2010

Massachusetts — spelled Massachusetts, do note –Democratic senatorial candidate Martha Coakley will spend this evening with major lobbyists in Washington. Seriously, she’s spending the night with lobbyists the week before the special election.

Martha Coakley is scheduled to meet with some of those key big-government lobbyists at a D.C. fundraiser tonight.

I thought this couldn’t possibly be for real. What candidate is caught dead with lobbyists the week before an election? I don’t care how secure you feel, it’s a very bad move. It shows that you’re going to listen to those who represent special interests over those who you should be representing.

So I looked around.

It’s for real. She’s meeting with 17 federally-registered lobbyists at a $10,000-per plate fundraiser this evening. The lobbyists come mostly from pharmaceutical companies and insurance companies.

If Martha Coakley is spending a crucial day before her election with high-paying lobbyists for drug and insurance companies, rather than meeting with voters and volunteers, who do you think she intends on representing in Congress? If you answered “special interests”, congratulations. You win the prize.
