How You Can Help Haitians

There are, unfortunately, many scams that show up right after a natural disaster. Con artists show up to take advantage of the generosity of individuals only looking to help their fellow man. It’s a shame but a reality nevertheless.

How do we deal with those scammers? By only going through reliable outlets generally known for accountability, public observance, and putting the vast majority of resources to good use. When you hand over your hard-earned money, you want to make sure it’s going to its intended purpose.

I’ve compiled the following list of organizations that generally meet those credentials. They come from major media outlets and even the State Department. Most of them you’ve probably heard of before.

  • The American Red Cross – Already has workers on the ground, searching for survivors and caring for those who have been suddenly displaced.
  • The Salvation Army – Like the previous choice, it’s world-renowned. The Salvation Army doesn’t just care for victims of a natural disaster immediately after the disaster. They stay behind to help after the story has stopped receiving wall-to-wall coverage.
  • MercyCorps – I’m actually sending you to the Amazon page, though you can find their actual website here. In case you missed it, this charity received the endorsement of Amazon.com. Also a well-known organization.
  • UNICEF – Official organization of the United Nations. Whether that’s a plus or minus depends on your worldview. Still, it’s a major organization with major backing.
  • Save the Children – Global charity with the endorsement of CNN and other major outlets. Sponsors include Toys ‘R’ Us, Mattel, and Johnson & Johnson. So you know the charity can be trusted with your money.

And, of course, there’s any easier way to give in today’s world. Texting “Haiti” to 90999 and $10 will automatically be donated to the American Red Cross. The charge will be posted to your phone bill. The number and its mission received the endorsement of Secretary of State Hillary Clinton on Fox News this morning.

Donations of any size are needed. $5 may not seem like much for a disaster this large, but realize that $5 is combined with similar donations from millions of other citizens. If everyone assumed their $5 didn’t count, there would be no help. You donation matters.
