Surprise: Dems Try to End Filibuster

by Stephan Tawney on January 22, 2010

It’s actually doomed to failure, but this shows how little powerful Democrats care about their fellow party members. Massachusetts, where Democrats outnumber Republicans 3:1, voted for Scott Brown on the promise that he’d filibuster the Senate health care legislation. Senate Democrats respond by trying to end the ability to filibuster.

Oh, why is this legislation doomed? Ending the filibuster requires a change in the Senate rules. Changes in Senate rules require 67 votes in favor of the new rule. Democrats would need eight Republicans to vote in favor of ending the Republican filibuster. For all intents and purposes, Republicans can filibuster the attempt to end the filibuster. Irony.
