The good news: Barack Obama has officially retreated on his attempt to try Khalid Sheikh Mohammed, mastermind of the 9/11 attacks, in a civilian trial in New York City.
The bad news: He apparently still intends to try the war criminal in a civilian trial somewhere. So while KSM won’t be allowed to use NYC as a propaganda platform, places like Los Angeles and Miami are still possibilities.
Which means, as of now, some place in America will still become a greater terror target and propaganda platform for al Qaeda. Mass-murdering terrorists may still be coming to your hometown. Just as long as you don’t live in Manhattan.
Of course, the better solution would’ve been to try the war criminal in a military tribunal at Guantanamo Bay. It’s far enough away from American soil that it wouldn’t become a propaganda platform or threaten any ordinary community. And our military base is already prepared to handle terrorism suspects and the security problems they bring.
That’s still our best option, but it’s not Hope’N'Changey enough for Barack Obama. He feels the need to prove that we’re morally superior to KSM, as if the fact we don’t target innocent people isn’t enough. And the international community, Obama’s most loyal constituency, wants these terrorists to be treated “fairly”. AKA, like any other domestic criminal rather than mass-murdering war criminals they are.
So, for the time being, expect this circus to remain on American soil.
