Education Secretary: Katrina “Best Thing” For NO Schools

by Stephan Tawney on January 29, 2010

A Republican would be forced to apologize or step-down over such a comment, but Education Secretary Arne Duncan isn’t a Republican. So he’ll walk away with a defense from the left-wing and a statement about his remarks being “taken out of context” or something.

Education Secretary Arne Duncan called Hurricane Katrina “the best thing that happened to the education system in New Orleans” because it forced the community to take steps to improve low-performing public schools, according to excerpts from the transcript of a television interview made public Friday afternoon.

He may well be right. But there’s a major double-standard here. I’d like to see him crucified over this remark if only because a Republican or conservative would, without hesitance, be slammed for saying the same thing.
