Report: Plane Carrying No-Fly Passenger Diverted to Florida

by Stephan Tawney on January 29, 2010

The Associated Press is reporting than an airliner has been diverted to Florida after it was discovered that a passenger on the no-fly list was apparently on board.

Update: The flight was a Continental Airlines flight from Newark, New Jersey to Columbia. The aircraft has been diverted to Jacksonville, Florida.

Update X2: The individual in question was on a terrorist watch list, apparently. Or, at least his name is on the list. Officials are diverting the plane to see if it’s the same person.

The biggest problem here: Airlines are not supposed to issue boarding passes to individuals on the no-fly list. One would assume he shouldn’t have made it past airport security measures, either.

Update X3: The plane has landed. Apparently his name is the same but the birth date is different. Not sure if he just gave another date or he’s not the guy they’re looking for.

Anyway, this exposes another major flaw in the airline security system. He shouldn’t have been allowed to board until they confirmed he wasn’t the guy on the no-fly list.
