DC Police Punish Conservative Columnist for Getting Hit by Gov’t SUV

by Stephan Tawney on February 4, 2010

Police in Washington, D.C. have punished conservative columnist Jim Treacher after he was struck by a State Department SUV and sent to the hospital, where he will require surgery later this week. Seriously.

Worse yet, the State Department is refusing to answer questions about the incident and claims that the whole thing went down blocks away from where witnesses and local officials confirmed it took place.

Sean Medlock, better known as Jim Treacher, was legally crossing the street around 7pm on Wednesday, when a vehicle from the U.S. Diplomatic Security Service (DSS) ran him down. He suffered a broken knee and other injuries, and was taken to George Washington University hospital in an ambulance. Witnesses had pulled him out of the road.

So what happened to the federal agent, now identified as Mike McGuinn, who was driving the vehicle? He called Medlock’s associates and then apparently went back to work. Now he’s refusing to answer questions, citing the fact he’s a federal agent and apparently doesn’t need to answer to the American people.

Oh, but Medlock is being punished. DC police drove to the hospital to deliver a jaywalking citation, but he was sedated on a gurney at the time, so a friend took it for him.

At the hospital, DC police officer John Muniz arrived to issue Medlock a $20 jaywalking ticket. Medlock was lying sedated on a gurney, so Muniz delivered the ticket to a Daily Caller colleague, who was at the hospital with Medlock. He looked embarrassed as he did so. Behind him stood a man dressed in a dark suit who identified himself as a “special agent.” He said nothing but wrote in a notebook.

Curiously, the ticket says that Medlock was struck at an intersection four blocks from where the accident actually took place. And it claims that Medlock was walking diagonally across the intersection at the time. In one of his strikingly short conversations with the Daily Caller, agent Mike McGuinn acknowledged that Medlock was not jaywalking at all, but walking “outside the crosswalk when the incident occurred.”

Now the State Department is refusing to answer questions from The Daily Caller, only issuing a bland statement that mentioned a jogger apparently attacking the government SUV.

There were witnesses and Medlock was taken to the hospital in an ambulance. Yet the ticket, which was apparently delivered along with a “special agent”, lies about the location and claims Medlock was jaywalking. Even the federal agent admits he wasn’t.

A columnist has been hit by a government SUV and for his trouble, which includes a surgery later this week, has been issued a ticket that lies about the location of the accident. Oh, and lies about the offense itself. Meanwhile, the State Department is covering up what happened and the local police seem to be helping.

It’s like something out of a spy novel, but I guess this is what happens when the Chicago political machine comes to Washington.

So, the driver and vehicle were from the State Dept. Does this mean Sean will get a visit from the SecState? If she does, can he get Hill to give him a look at her tattoo?

Hey, at least something awesome oughta come outta this.

Not only do i feel bad for Treach, but out of all the DC bloggers this is who gets whacked ?

There are so many others who could actually learn something from this episode, yet fate hits one guy who least deserves it.

    Its a travishamockery.

And the jaywalking ticket ? Really?

This kind of thing happens in China all the time. It’s a method of silencing dissent there. But the internet has changed things in the sense that the dissent is more noticeable than before.

You would think they would know better than to take on somebody who doesn’t even need to buy “ink by the barrel.” They still don’t understand the internet, do they?

  6. NavyspyII Says:

Unreal. A Federal agent damn near commits vehicular homicide, and then files a false police report about it. And no one in the Gvt feels that he should answer for it?

Maybe after Jim is convicted of the Jwalking ticket, they’ll make his family pay for the bullet they execute him with, as in the old USSR.
