Another Democratic Governor Drops Re-Election Bid

Governor David Paterson (D-NY) will announce that he’s ending his bid for re-election after a slew of scandals and general incompetence drove down his poll numbers to irreparable levels.

Paterson, under investigation by Attorney General Andrew Cuomo for contacting a woman who accused one of his top aides of domestic violence, is making it official with an announcement from his Manhattan office at 3 p.m.

Democrats can’t get Paterson, who replaced disgraced governor and fellow Democrat Elliot Spitzer, out of office quickly enough. As the Daily News reports, some want him to leave the governor’s mansion immediately, figuring the less New Yorkers are exposed to Democratic incompetence the better.

“If the investigation turns out the way many suspect, his resignation is almost inevitable,” state Sen. Bill Perkins, who hold Paterson’s old Harlem Senate seat, told WNYC.

“If that is the case, then it is in the best interest of the people of New York for him to cut bait now,” Perkins insisted.

“If he knows, as I believe he does, what exactly will be revealed in the course of the investigation and if it is unfortunately as is suspected, then for the sake of the people of the state why go through this investigation and the turmoil that will be a part of it,” he added.

Paterson’s staff tells the Daily News that the governor has no intention of resigning. And why should he? To help his party, which drove him out of the campaign? Besides, his reputation is already destroyed. He may as well enjoy the time left in office. He’ll party while the ship sinks.
