Poll: Majority of Americans View Gov’t As Threat To Rights

by Stephan Tawney on February 26, 2010

The only surprising element to this story is that the number isn’t higher.

Of course the government is a threat to individual rights. The government is constantly trying to gain more and more control over the lives of the people. The government is always attempting to chip away at individual liberty in pursuit of more centralized control. That’s why you should seek officeholders who intend to reverse or at least halt the natural course of growing government control. Which is why I, like many others, seek out conservative and libertarian candidates.

Do note this:

The survey indicates a partisan divide on the question: only 37 percent of Democrats, 63 percent of Independents and nearly 7 in 10 Republicans say the federal government poses a threat to the rights of Americans.

Which explains in a nutshell why political observers are talking about major losses for Democrats in November. Most Democrats don’t view the federal government as a threat to their freedoms. In fact, Gallup found a majority of Democrats with a favorable view of socialism. Meanwhile, Independents and Republicans overwhelmingly understand the threat posed to individual liberty by an ever-expanding government.

But even at that, nearly four in ten Democrats side with Republicans and Independents on the issue. If Republicans can frame the election as being a choice between more federal government and less government control, they easily have a chance to take the House. Possibly the Senate. Americans in general are sick and tired of Washington grabbing for more and more control. And it’s going to come back and bite liberal incumbents in the butt come November.
