Durbin: Premiums Will Go Up Under ObamaCare

by Stephan Tawney on March 10, 2010

Senator Dick Durbin (D-Ill) is one of those Democrats who really don’t care what you think or say, so you can often count on him to reveal the truth about liberal legislation.

While Democrats who need to appease the public, like Barack Obama or Harry Reid, insist their government-run health care legislation would lower premiums, Durbin — the second-highest ranking Democrat in the Senate — calls those claims lies. In fact, he admits premiums would increase under ObamaCare.

Incidentally, the official non-partisan Congressional Budget Office agrees. According to an analysis released (PDF) by the agency back in November, government intervention in the private market will only make the problem worse.

Individual insurance premiums would increase by an average of 10 percent or more, according to an analysis of the Senate healthcare bill.

Meanwhile, Obama insists premiums would be reduced through passage of government-run health care. It would seem the Congressional Budget Office and second-ranking Senate Democrat disagree. The latter thinks the best possible outcome from passage would be a minor slowdown in price increases.
