Is anyone surprised? Democrats in the White House and Congress are spending like they’ve won the governmental version of Powerball, so the only real news here is that the deficit wasn’t higher than $221 billion for the month of February.
And by the way, that comes after a rare increase in monthly government revenue. So let’s see what the monthly deficit looks like next month as unemployment ticks up and additional federal regulation strangles business.
WASHINGTON—Even as government receipts posted a rare increase in February, soaring outlays pushed the country’s year-to-date deficit up to a record $651.60 billion.
The government’s fiscal 2010 year-to-date deficit is up 10.5% from fiscal year 2009.
The government in February alone ran its largest ever monthly deficit—$221 billion, the U.S. Treasury said in releasing its monthly budget statement Wednesday. The government in February 2009 ran a budget deficit of nearly $194 billion.
We spent $16.1 billion during February just to service our debt. Interest payments alone have totaled $86.5 billion.
Does this sound fiscally responsible to you? Does it even sound sustainable? Of course not, on both counts. And yet Washington Democrats continue to increase spending and push for a $1 trillion+ government-run health care bill. It’s amazingly tone-deaf.
