Stupak: Some Pro-Life Democrats Caving To Pro-Abortion Crowd

by Stephan Tawney on March 12, 2010

Representative Bart Stupak (D-MI) says he won’t buckle under pressure from the pro-abortion crowd but that a few of his coalition members may have already. Stupak is currently fighting passage of the Senate government-run health care legislation because it provides federal tax dollars for abortion procedures.

In a stunning interview with National Review, Rep. Bart Stupak said that he’s a definite “no” vote on health care, but that other pro-life Democrats are beginning to cave under enormous pressure.

“At this point, there is no doubt that they’ve been able to peel off one or two of my twelve,” he said.

Any pro-life House member who supports federal abortion funding is committing political suicide. A pro-life Democrat doesn’t get elected because his or her district is solidly pro-choice. Republicans will be able to bash the Democratic incumbent over the head with this vote, and the Republican candidate will win.

Stupak also tells National Review:

“I didn’t cave. The others are having both of their arms twisted, and we’re all getting pounded by our traditional Democratic supporters, like unions.”

Of course they are. Most of the Democratic Party’s elected officials are beholden to groups like the SEIU and ACORN. They rely on the former for astroturfing and thuggery, while they use the latter for voter registration fraud. Why should things be any different when it comes to government-run health care legislation?

Stupak says he also doesn’t trust the “Slaughter solution,” a legislative maneuver being bandied about on Capitol Hill as a way to pass the Senate bill in the House without actually voting on it. “Fool me once, shame on you. Fool me twice, shame on me,” he says. “I don’t have a warm-and-fuzzy feeling about what I’m hearing.”

That, and the fact it wouldn’t pass the Constitutional smell test a joint SEUI-ACORN conference held at UC Berkeley. There’s now way to legally pass legislation without actually having voted for or against it. One would have to completely ignore the United States Constitution to use the “Slaughter Solution”.

But here’s the worst part:

What are Democratic leaders saying? “If you pass the Stupak amendment, more children will be born, and therefore it will cost us millions more. That’s one of the arguments I’ve been hearing,” Stupak says. “Money is their hang-up. Is this how we now value life in America? If money is the issue — come on, we can find room in the budget. This is life we’re talking about.”

Is that a fucking joke? Democratic Party leaders are now supporting federally-funded abortion because more living children would cost taxpayers more money in the long term? We’re going to fund the killing of children…to prevent having to potentially fund the health care of these children in the long-term? Did this solution come from Mein Kampf?

Where does that line of logic stop? We could also save money by not treating children with life-threatening injuries at emergency rooms. Imagine the money we could save by just letting them die in the parking lot! No need to fund education or any long-term expenses. Cha-ching, baby!

It’s disgusting, and so is the Democratic Party’s leadership.

Update: Allahpundit can’t quite believe it. Why? Obama went on record calling for people to take pain pills rather than receiving pacemakers. Democrats are obviously on record supporting taxpayer funds for procedures to end lives. They simply don’t value life. Arguing that such a position saves money isn’t exactly unbelievable.
