Reid Promises: Vote On Public Option Within Months

by Stephan Tawney on March 19, 2010

The Senate wouldn’t have the votes to pass a public option under regular rules, so he would have to use the reconciliation process…again. Which isn’t the purpose of the reconciliation process. But that wouldn’t stop Dingy Harry from ramming it through anyway.

Which brings us to this:

In a letter to two of his more progressive colleagues in the Senate — Jeff Merkley of Oregon and Bernie Sanders of Vermont — the Nevada Democrat implicitly apologized for his inability to get a government-run insurance plan into the final piece of health care legislation and promised to keep working to get the policy into law…

“Nevertheless, like you, I remain committed to pursuing the public option. While I believe that the legislation we are considering does much to provide affordable coverage to millions of Americans and curb insurance company abuses, I also believe that the public option would provide additional competition to make insurance even more affordable. As we have discussed, I will work to ensure that we are able to vote on the public option in the coming months.”

Dingy Harry is now doing everything possible to ensure his defeat in November. As if the government-run health care legislation currently being passed weren’t bad enough, he’ll now be on record promising a government takeover of the private health care sector. And he wants libertarian Nevada to re-elect his sorry ass?

And here’s the part about reconciliation:

The search now is for a vehicle outside health care reform to get a public plan into law. The same institutional hurdles that killed the provision in the previous go-rounds — mainly that there aren’t 60 supportive senators to break a filibuster — remain. But aides on the Hill are already looking to future reconciliation vehicles to which they can attach the public plan, which would, in turn, allow for it to pass via an up-or-down vote.

Ignoring Senate rules will now become Democratic modus operandi when it comes to passing legislation, how do I put this, nobody fucking wants. And then the same legislation will be sent over to the House of Representatives, where Speaker Nancy will “deem” it passed without an actual vote. Then it’s off to Obama for signature.

Basically, Democrats have reached the point where they’re no longer just ignoring the will of the American people. They’re not just sleezily using loopholes. They’re actually ignoring the rules for the loopholes they’re sleezily using while ignoring the will of the American people.

Translation: Democrats are going to do whatever the fuck they want, regardless of the rules or Constitution. They’re not even going to care about attaining proper majority support support in Congress. In a move that would make Vladimir Lenin proud, they’ll “deem” proposals into law and then count on Americans supporting it later on.

Welcome to Barack Obama’s America. But don’t dare allude to these sleeze buckets having socialist tendencies.
