Stupak Close To Selling Out?

by Stephan Tawney on March 21, 2010

Reports indicate that Rep. Bart Stupak (D-MI) may be close to selling-out his convictions by backing government-run health care that provides funding for abortion procedures.

Rep. Bart Stupak (D-Mich.) said Sunday morning that he is close to striking a deal with the Obama administration on abortion provisions.

“We are close to getting something done,” Stupak said in an interview with MSNBC.

The possible deal would focus on an executive order that would specify there would be no public funding for abortions in the healthcare bill.

“We’re close but we’re not there yet,” Stupak said.

On problem: An executive order can be repealed by the president at a later date. Obama could literally sign the order, the House call the vote, and Obama could repeal the order. And there’s nothing we could do about it. The EO would have no binding legal effect anyway.

So basically it would be bullshit political cover to permit Stupak and his block to retreat and vote for federal funding for abortion procedures. Which is why you don’t hear the pro-abortion crowd screaming their heads off at these latest reports. Because they know an executive order would be meaningless.
