Democrats Vote Against Student Loan Rate Reduction

by Stephan Tawney on March 24, 2010

Senate Democrats have voted against an attempt by Senate Republicans to reduce student loan rates by 1.5%.

The measure was introduced by Senator Lamar Alexander (R-TN) today.

Alexander said his amendment to legislation pending in the Senate authorizing the federal government to take over student lending would save the average Tennessee student up to $1,800 in interest over 10 years.

In short, Senate Democrats voted against a Republican attempt to save students upwards of $1,800 on their student loans. How these same Democrats can then claim to represent the interests of young people is beyond me.
