Democrats want to frame all post-health care legislation violence or threats of violence as evidence of growing right-wing terrorism against government. But we know how threats of violence and even outright violence were perpetrated by the left and against the right over the past eight years. In fact, Politico has noted:
A Republican aide also pointed out that over the years Republican members of Congress received their fair share of death threats during volatile times. Newt Gingrich after the 1994 Republican revolution and the late Henry Hyde during the Clinton impeachment in 1998 both received numerous death threats. And just last month, Sen. Jim Bunning (R-Ky.) received death threats after his filibuster of unemployment benefits, according to a report in Roll Call.
Bunning also received bomb threats after his threat of filibustering the unemployment legislation. Bomb threats.
And now there’s this. Representative Eric Cantor (R-VA) is one of the most prominent opponents of the government-run health care legislation just signed into law. His office was hit with a bullet:
(CNN) – Police in Richmond, Virginia have released more details about a bullet that hit an office used by House Minority Whip Eric Cantor.
Cantor revealed to reporters Thursday that his office had been hit by a bullet. He accused top Democrats of “fanning the flames” of violence by using threats that have been made against Democratic members “as political weapons.”
Here’s the latest information from local authorities:
The Richmond Police Department is investigating an act of vandalism at the Reagan Building, 25 E. Main St., Richmond, Virginia. A first floor window was struck by a bullet at approximately 1 a.m. on Tuesday, March 23. The building, which has several tenants including an office used by Congressman Eric Cantor, was unoccupied at the time.
A Richmond Police detective was assigned to the case. A preliminary investigation shows that a bullet was fired into the air and struck the window in a downward direction, landing on the floor about a foot from the window. The round struck with enough force to break the windowpane but did not penetrate the window blinds. There was no other damage to the room, which is used occasionally for meetings by the congressman.
The Richmond Police Department is sharing information about the incident with appropriate law enforcement agencies.
You don’t have to go far to find cases of left-wing violence. The Obama Administration suddenly dropped an investigation into voter intimidation by the black nationalist group Black Panther Party during the 2008 election. SEIU members — supporters of Barack Obama — assaulted a black conservative, Kenneth Gladney, outside of a town hall event last year. They broke his glasses and he ended up in a wheelchair.
But now Democrats need to deflect some political blow back after passing massively unpopular government-run health care legislation, so they’re framing alleged post-vote threats of violence as a product of growing right-wing extremism that should be feared. Pathetic.
