AP: Dude, Did You Know There Are Black Conservatives?

by Stephan Tawney on April 6, 2010

Actually, the article deals more with difficulty for black conservatives than shock over their very existence. Still, you can detect an almost revelatory nature as if being black and conservative at the same time is stunning.

They’ve been called Oreos, traitors and Uncle Toms, and are used to having to defend their values. Now black conservatives are really taking heat for their involvement in the mostly white tea party movement — and for having the audacity to oppose the policies of the nation’s first black president.

“I’ve been told I hate myself. I’ve been called an Uncle Tom. I’ve been told I’m a spook at the door,” said Timothy F. Johnson, chairman of the Frederick Douglass Foundation, a group of black conservatives who support free market principles and limited government…

Since Obama’s election, Webb said some black conservatives have even resorted to hiding their political views.

“I know of people who would play the (liberal) role publicly, but have their private opinions,” he said. “They don’t agree with the policy but they have to work, live and exist in the community … Why can’t we speak openly and honestly if we disagree?”

Notice that the Associated Press still gets a dig in about “mostly white” tea party movement. Newsflash: The United States is mostly white as well. In fact, 79% of the tea party movement and 75% of the country are white. Gallup recently released a survey showing the tea party movement as a microcosm of the United States as a whole.

But back to the general topic of the article.

It’s honestly a shame that black conservatives should feel the need to hide their political views. What is so shameful about opposing out-of-control spending and job-killing taxes? What’s shameful about believing in the supremacy of the individual over the collective? Nothing. But black conservatives are attacked by the supposedly tolerant left for not simply gulping down what Nancy Pelosi’s selling.
