Report: Democrats Want Filibuster Eliminated

by Stephan Tawney on April 22, 2010

Hey, remember when Democrats considered the filibuster an essential part of democracy and an integral aspect of our nation’s history? Yeah, that was before they were about to lose their near-filibuster-proof majority in the US Senate. Now they think it’s old news and obstructionist.

Senate Republicans warn on their blog:

Senate Democrats Gather In The Rules Committee To Eliminate The Filibuster, Which They Previously Called One “Of The Most Treasured And Cherished Traditions Of The United States Senate.”

Why should we believe just a report from the minority? Because prominent Democrats have talked about eliminating the filibuster in recent history.

Sen. Tom Harkin (D-Iowa) intends to introduce legislation that would take away the minority’s power to filibuster legislation.

Sen. Tom Harkin (D-Iowa) intends in the next few weeks to introduce legislation that would take away the minority’s power to filibuster legislation.

That was right after Senator Scott Brown (R-MA) won the US Senate race in Massachusetts, leaving Democrats with only 59 regular votes — one short of a filibuster-proof majority.

For years Democrats threatened to go nuclear whenever a Republican would even float the idea of eliminating the filibuster. Now Democrats are on track to lose seats in November and they’re introducing proposals to eliminate the “obstructionist” tool. Hypocrites.
