Breaking: Car Bomb Found in Times Square?

The New York Times reports that Times Square has been evacuated following the discovery of what is suspected to be a bomb in an a sports utility vehicle.

Apparently the situation began when emergency services were notified about smoke coming from the vehicle around 6:30 pm. A bomb squad unit has been dispatched to the scene.

Thousands of tourists and theatergoers were cleared from Times Square as the police investigated what they suspected was a car bomb there on Saturday evening.

Police officials said they received a report about 6:30 p.m. of smoke coming from a Nissan Pathfinder parked on 45th Street just west of Seventh Avenue. The authorities found a smoking package in the vehicle and now believe it was a bomb. A bomb squad was sent to the scene.

The package did not explode, and officials said they did not know whether it was related to terrorism.

They’re not sure if an SUV parked in Times Square and containing a smoking bomb is related to terrorism. Um…okay.

Update X3: Apparently the New York Fire Department is saying the vehicle also contained propane tanks, gasoline, and burned wires.

Update X4: NBC 4 is reporting that the explosive device consisted of black powder, propane, and a timing device.

Update X5: Reuters says it was a failed car bombing. A man was seen fleeing from the vehicle, a black Nissan Pathfinder, shortly before the incident began.

Update X6: WNBC says it was 3 propane tanks, 2 gasoline, and what resembles an I.E.D.

Update X7: NYPD has confirmed that the vehicle contained propane tanks and gas tanks. No word on the black powder or timing device.
