Breaking: Explosive Device Found At Pittsburgh Marathon

by Stephan Tawney on May 2, 2010

This on the heels of last night’s attempted car bombing of Times Square. Undoubtedly investigators will be looking into whether the two incidents are connected. Was this an attempt to recoup terror losses from last night, ala the 2007 attempted London car bombing? Was it coordinated at all? Or was this another lone-wolfer?

For now, the facts:

PITTSBURGH — Police say they have found an explosive device near the course of the Pittsburgh Marathon, forcing them to detour the final part of the race.

Police say the device was found in a small microwave oven on the sidewalk after the leaders had finished the course Sunday morning. Several blocks were cordoned off near the original finish line for the marathon and half-marathon.

The bomb squad used a robot to disable the device. The all-clear was given for the area shortly before 11 a.m. About 5,000 people took part in the full marathon.

Perhaps military readers could weigh-in on this one, but it sounds like the general concept behind a roadside IED. You hide a home-crafted explosive in a seemingly innocuous item alongside the road and then detonate it once people are in the area.

Car bombs and IEDs in America. Scary times.
