He’s actually arguing that exposure to different view points and new information is bad. As Gabriel Malor says, he appears to be paraphrasing the bad guys from Nineteen Eighty-Four.
“You’re coming of age in a 24/7 media environment that bombards us with all kinds of content and exposes us to all kinds of arguments, some of which don’t always rank all that high on the truth meter,” Obama said at Hampton University, Virginia.
“With iPods and iPads and Xboxes and PlayStations, — none of which I know how to work — information becomes a distraction, a diversion, a form of entertainment, rather than a tool of empowerment, rather than the means of emancipation,” Obama said.
He bemoaned the fact that “some of the craziest claims can quickly claim traction,” in the clamor of certain blogs and talk radio outlets.
“All of this is not only putting new pressures on you, it is putting new pressures on our country and on our democracy.”
The president of the United States is arguing quite publicly that exposure to information and differing viewpoints is bad. He thinks technology that puts information in the hands of ordinary people is something to be despised.
Leftism relies on ignorance on juvenile simplicity. People don’t have health insurance? Let’s give everyone health insurance! People are poor? Let’s give them all the money they need! Illegal aliens are nice and want to be here? Let them stay!
No thoughts about negative repercussions or whether we’re actually helping the people in need. Just solutions with which a six-year-old with little knowledge of history or basic economics would agree. Think of extreme left states past and present like China, the Soviet Union, and Cuba. Did they like information flowing freely? Absolutely not.
Obama’s arguing the same thing here. Exposing people to information, especially the younger masses, is bad. Why? Because he says the arguments or conclusions are wrong, but really because the flow of information may lead people to realize the sham to which his arguments amount.
