I’m not sure why Allahpundit can’t believe this news. Is the move sleezy and transparently hackish? Yes. Is it a complete and total flip-flop? Sure. Does it show Charlie Crist can’t be trusted to keep his word on political donations much less ideological positions? Absolutely. Is this anything new? Not at all.
I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again. Charlie Crist is all about Charlie Crist’s best interests at this particular moment. He doesn’t care about his past promises, supposed ideological convictions, supporters and constituents, or even how this will make him look a month from now. He makes a decision based on one question alone: Does this help Charlie Crist right now?
And as it turns out, keeping donor money helps Charlie Crist right now
A couple hours before Crist officially becomes an NPA voter, campaign spokeswoman Michelle Todd said there will be no refunds. Asked if that amounts to a flip-flop, she said, “We have never made an official statement before. It is now the official statement. They donated to the Charlie Crist for U.S. Senate Campaign and it’s still the Charlie Crist for U.S. Senate Campaign.”
Said the Rubio campaign: “As Charlie Crist continually reinvents himself to do-say-be anything to win an election, he is now going back on his word to Floridians and is decidedly not listening to the people. It seems that Charlie Crist is only willing to listen to the people if they dont want a refund from his campaign.”
Of course, they actually donated to the “Charlie Crist for U.S. Senate Campaign” that promised Governor Orange Glo of Loompaland was running for the GOP nomination only and would “of course” endorse the eventual GOP nominee. So you can imagine the sudden change of heart for donors when Flip-Flop Charlie becomes an Independent and runs against the likely GOP nominee.
