First the Attorney General and now the Secretary of Homeland Security. Both have heavily criticized SB 1070, neither one has actually read the legislation. You get the feeling that the Obama Administration kind of just launched attacks against the law because its goal is to stop illegal immigration.
By the way, the legislation is so short you could read it over lunch and still have time for a game of backgammon. And that’s for a layman, never mind the Attorney General or Secretary of Homeland Security. So the only real excuse for them to have not read the legislation is plausible deniability.
“This law permits law enforcement to indefinitely hold any Hispanic person. You mean it specifically bans that? Oh, well I’m only telling you what I’ve heard. I haven’t actually read the legislation. But I’ll get around to that sooner or later.”
Voila. You get to level whatever charges you please against the legislation without actually being accused of lying. Just chalk it up to things you’ve heard rather than your blatant misrepresentation or flat-out flies.
By the way, in addition to 60% thinking the legislation is fair or doesn’t go far enough, 55% actually want a similar law for their own state. If I were a Democrat I’d tread lightly in this territory.
